Mail
  1. I can't send mail with Outlook Express. I get a rcpthosts error.
Before you can send email using your smtp server you need to set up outlook express to download email from the same mail server using POP3. When the POP3 box is checked, you can send emails within the next 15-30 minutes.

  2. How do I get FormMail working?
It's a perl script. You need to add .pl as extention for CGI. You can find it on the web options page.

  3. How do I cut down the Spam I receive?
I don't ever see any Spam myself, as I use Eudora as my e-mail program, and it has Anti-Spam measures built right in. So I have seen no spam for months now.

I suggest you install a MODERN and UP-TO-DATE e-mail program such as Eudora. Almost all modern e-mail clients now have Anti-Spam measures built-in, so there is no need for anyone to be bothered by Spam any more.

If your mail client does not filter Spam then it is old and outmoded, and needs replacing by something more up to the job of dealing with the demands of modern-day e-mail.

My Advice: Get a good E-mail program with built-in Anti-Spam features, such as Eudora (www.eudora.com) or there is K9 (http://www.keir.net/k9.html)

  4. I can't send mail
FOR MOST OF YOU, Whatever your e-mail program, you should set your OUTGOING or SMTP server for each mail account to the same server as your ISP's outgoing or SMTP server.

HOWEVER, For those of you on broadband, with no mail facilities from their ISP, your outgoing server should be set to the same server as your incoming or POP server, with one important new change.

In Outlook Express, go to "Tools/Accounts" On the "Mail" tab select the account in question, and then click on the "Properties" button to the right. In the Properties requester click on the "Servers" tab.
Make sure the box saying "My server requires authentication" is ticked (on) Click the "settings" button next to it. Make sure that "use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected (on) Click ok.

Now when you send mail the SMTP server will check that you are a genuine Smart Art client before allowing your mail to be sent.

If anyone wants further explanation, or help setting up, you can ring the office.

Domain Name
  1. What is a domain name?
Domain names are the familiar, easy to remember names for computers on the Internet (such as internic.net). They correspond to a series of numbers (called Internet Protocol numbers) that serve as routing addresses on the Internet. Domain names are used generally as a convenient way of locating information and reaching others on the Internet.

  2. What does "register a domain name" mean?
The Internet domain name system (DNS) consists of a directory, organized hierarchically, of all the domain names and their corresponding computers registered to particular companies and persons using the Internet. When you register a domain name, it will be associated with the computer on the Internet you designate during the period the registration is in effect.

  3. Someone else has registered my company's name as a .com domain name. What is the process for resolving my complaint?
All ICANN-accredited registrars follow a uniform dispute resolution policy. Under that policy, disputes over entitlement to a domain-name registration are ordinarily resolved by court litigation between the parties claiming rights to the registration.

Once the court rules who is entitled to the registration, the registrar will implement that ruling. In disputes arising from registrations allegedly made abusively (such as "cybersquatting" and cyberpiracy"), the uniform policy provides an expedited administrative procedure to allow the dispute to be resolved without the cost and delays often encountered in court litigation. In these cases, you can invoke the administrative procedure by filing a complaint with one of the dispute-resolution service providers listed at http://www.icann.org/udrp/approved-providers.htm.

For more details on the uniform dispute resolution policy, see http://www.icann.org/udrp/udrp.htm.

  2. How come my virtual FTP users can browse my root directory?
Your virtual FTP users can have access to more than one virtual FTP directory, so you need to allow them to enter the root dir. You can use FTP subaccounts to restrict their access to only one directory.

  5. My screen graphics look very poor. How do I set my screen to "True Colour" (16m colours)?
    OK, no problem, do this...

Make sure all programs are closed first, and then...

On your Windows desktop (somewhere in the middle), right click...
From the Contect Menu that pops up select "Properties".
From the "Display Properties" requester that pops up click on the right hand "Settings" tab.
This should now show a picture of a monitor and show you your display settings.
The left hand "Colours" has a select box allowing you to choose 16, 256, "High Colour (16 bit)" or "True Colour (32 bit)".
Select True Colour and then click OK to close the requester down.

At this point it may ask you if you want to re-boot, select "yes" if it does. If it doesn't you should re-boot anyway for the new settings to take effect.

  6. I am still seeing old versions of my site even though I know that there have been changes. - How do I make sure I see the latest versions of web pages?
In I.E. go to "Tools/Internet Options"
In the section under "Temorary Internet Files" click the "Delete Files" button. Then click the "Settings" button in the same section.
Make sure that where it says "Check for newer versions of stored pages" that the "Every Visit to Page" is highlighted (on).
    Click "ok" twice.
Then do a cold re-boot of your system to clear the cache from memory as well. (Cold Re-Boot means actually switching power off for at least 30 seconds to clear all memory)
